Principal Photography

The main shooting period when primary cast and the first unit capture the bulk of the film.

Producer's Cut

An early cut reflecting the producer's editorial pass, often before or alongside a director's cut depending on the deal.

Production Design

The department and craft that create the physical world of the film — sets, locations dressing, and props direction.

Production Sound

Dialogue and ambient audio recorded on set during photography, later edited and mixed with ADR and effects.

Residuals

Backend payments to talent and certain creatives when a project is reused or redistributed under union or contract rules.

Room Tone

A recording of a location's ambient silence, used in editorial to fill gaps and smooth dialogue edits.

Rotoscope

Frame-by-frame isolation or tracing of a subject so it can be separated, replaced, or composited cleanly.

Rough Cut

An early editorial pass after the assembly — structure is forming, but pacing and polish are still open.

Safety Meeting

A brief before a hazardous sequence where risks, cues, abort signals, and roles are confirmed with cast and crew.

Scene Heading

The slugline that opens a scene — INT. or EXT., location, and time of day — so production can schedule and budget the script.

Score

Original music composed to picture, typically spotted with the director and editor to support story and emotion.

Screenplay Format

Industry standard layout for scripts — sluglines, action, character cues, and dialogue — expected by readers and production.

Screenplayer
